How to Choose a MUN Conference
Indian students have more conferences to choose from than ever, and quality varies enormously. The signals that predict a good conference are visible before you pay, if you know what to look at.
What to check before registering
The executive board is the single strongest predictor. Chairs with real circuit experience run better debate and score more fairly.
Published background guides are the second signal — a conference that has not written its guides two weeks before the event has not prepared its committees either.
- Named executive board with verifiable MUN history.
- Background or delegate guides published in advance.
- Clear agenda phrasing, not vague themes.
- Transparent fee structure and refund policy.
- Realistic committee sizes.
Warning signs
No named chairs, agendas announced days before the conference, and fees demanded without any documentation are all reasons to walk away.
Be equally wary of conferences with fifteen committees and no visible organising capacity.
Fit matters more than prestige
A first-time delegate learns more in a well-run mid-size conference than in a prestigious one where they never get the floor.
Choose the conference whose committee list actually contains a room you want to be in for two days.
