ECOSOC in Model UN
ECOSOC coordinates the UN's economic, social and development work. It is the most documentation-heavy committee at most conferences, and the one where funding mechanisms decide which resolution passes.
Mandate
ECOSOC coordinates the work of UN funds, programmes and specialised agencies, and drives the Sustainable Development Goals agenda.
Its resolutions are recommendations, but its coordination role means clauses can realistically assign work to UNDP, UNICEF, ILO, WHO and similar bodies.
Common agendas
Development finance, labour, inequality and health systems dominate.
- Sovereign debt and development finance.
- Informal-sector labour protections.
- Digital divide and technology access.
- Food security and agricultural resilience.
- Universal health coverage financing.
Writing ECOSOC clauses that survive
Every clause needs a funding source. "Establishes a fund" without naming who contributes and on what basis will be amended or voted down.
Name implementing agencies explicitly and give reporting timelines — ECOSOC chairs weight implementability heavily.
