What Is Model United Nations?

If someone in your class keeps talking about 'committee', 'placards' and 'position papers', this is the page that explains what they actually mean. Model United Nations is the single best training ground a student in India has for public speaking, research and negotiation — and it starts with one committee room.

1. What MUN is

Model United Nations (MUN) is an academic simulation of United Nations bodies and other decision-making forums. Each delegate is assigned a country — or in specialised committees, a politician, journalist or founder — and must argue that assigned position on a fixed agenda, not their personal opinion. Debate runs under formal rules of procedure and ends in a negotiated written document called a resolution.

2. How a committee runs

• Roll call — the chair confirms who is present and voting.
• Opening speeches — each delegate states their country's stance in about 60–90 seconds.
• Moderated caucus — structured debate on a narrow sub-topic, timed by the chair.
• Unmoderated caucus — free lobbying time to build blocs and start drafting.
• Working paper and draft resolution — the bloc's written solution.
• Amendments and voting procedure — the committee edits and then votes.

3. Roles at a conference

• Delegate — represents a country and debates the agenda.
• Executive Board / chairs — run the committee, enforce procedure and evaluate delegates.
• International Press — journalists, photographers and caricaturists covering committees.
• Secretariat — the organising team that builds the conference itself.

4. Types of committees

A conference usually mixes United Nations bodies (UNHRC, DISEC, ECOSOC, UNCSW, UNOOSA), Indian political simulations (Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, AIPPM) and special or crisis formats.
