MUN Conferences in India

India runs hundreds of Model UN conferences a year and they are not remotely equal. Some will change how you speak for life; others are a registration fee and a certificate. Here is how to tell them apart before you pay.

1. Understand the circuit

Indian MUNs broadly fall into school-hosted conferences, college-hosted conferences and independent organisations that run national circuits. School MUNs are gentle and local; college MUNs are competitive and procedure-heavy; independent conferences usually mix both pools and attract delegates from multiple states — which is where your learning curve is steepest.

2. Judge committee quality

• Is a written background guide published before the conference? If not, walk away.
• Are agendas specific ('regulating dual-use space technology') or vague ('world peace')?
• Is the Executive Board named publicly, with prior MUN experience?
• Is there a published portfolio matrix so you know who you might represent?
• Are awards criteria stated in advance?

3. Fees and what they include

Ask exactly what the delegate fee covers: meals, conference kit, certificate, socials and accommodation are all charged differently across conferences. A ₹1,500 fee with meals and a kit is usually better value than a ₹900 fee where everything is extra. Confirm the refund and substitution policy before paying.

4. School and college delegations

• Delegations of five or more almost always unlock per-head discounts.
• Nominate one faculty or student head to manage allotments and communication.
• Request a spread of committees so beginners and veterans both get a fit.
• Ask whether the conference issues an official invitation letter for school permission.

5. Red flags

• No background guides, or guides copied from other conferences.
• No named organising team and no verifiable past editions.
• Payment requested to a personal account with no receipt or confirmation email.
• Committee allocations announced only on the morning of the conference.
• Awards promised in exchange for registrations or referrals.
